Petrus van der Velden left the Netherlands at fifty-three and found, in this Southern Alps gorge, a wilderness violent enough to match his Dutch Romantic imagination. He hiked into Otira during thunderstorms to paint its river roaring over rock, giving raw New Zealand nature a gravity no local painter had dared attempt.
