The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck
The Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck
The Arnolfini Portrait (1434)
Jan van Eyck | Northern Renaissance | Oil on oak panel
A wealthy couple stands in a fancy room. Look closely, there's a round mirror on the back wall showing the room from behind!
Did you know? Above the mirror, van Eyck wrote "Jan van Eyck was here, 1434" in fancy Latin. The mirror shows two visitors in the doorway, and some experts think one of them is the painter himself!
