A Bar at the Folies-Bergère by Édouard Manet
A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882)
Édouard Manet | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
A barmaid stands at her counter with bottles of champagne and beer. Behind her is a magical mirror showing a busy crowd!
Did you know? The mirror is a puzzle! The man's reflection is shifted off to the right and the bottles do not line up, so critics said Manet got it wrong. In 2000, an art historian rebuilt the scene and showed it could really work. Now look at the top left corner: those green boots belong to a trapeze artist!
