Bacchus by Caravaggio
Bacchus (1598)
Caravaggio | Baroque | Oil on canvas
A young man dressed as the Roman god of wine holds out a glass, inviting you to join the party! His cheeks are rosy and a basket of fruit sits on the table.
Did you know? This painting sat forgotten in the Uffizi's storerooms until it was found there in 1913, and the art historian Roberto Longhi then recognized it as a Caravaggio. Look closely at the basket: there is a rotting apple in it!
