Barge Haulers on the Volga by Ilya Repin
Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873)
Ilya Repin | Realism | Oil on canvas
Eleven tired workers pull a heavy boat along the river using thick ropes and leather straps. The sun beats down as they strain against their load.
Did you know? In 1870 Repin went to the Volga to sketch real haulers, then kept reworking the painting until 1873. The man leading the group, Kanin, was a real hauler, and the other haulers told Repin he had once been a priest!
