The Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio
The Calling of Saint Matthew (1600)
Caravaggio | Baroque | Oil on canvas
Jesus points at Matthew while a beam of light falls across the dark room, calling him to follow. Caravaggio became famous for this kind of dramatic light and shadow!
Did you know? Look at Jesus's hand: it is almost a mirror image of Adam's hand in Michelangelo's Creation of Adam. Caravaggio himself had a hot temper. He was arrested several times for carrying illegal weapons, and in 1606 he had to flee Rome with a death sentence hanging over him!
