Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent
Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1886)
John Singer Sargent | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Two girls in white dresses light paper lanterns in a flower garden at twilight. The lanterns glow softly among tall white lilies and pink roses, and the whole garden takes on the purple tint of evening!
Did you know? Sargent could only paint for a few minutes each evening, when the light was just right. He started in 1885 and finished in 1886, and when the real garden flowers died, he swapped in fake ones to keep painting!
