Crow and Blossom by Ohara Koson
Crow and Blossom (1910)
Ohara Koson | Shin-hanga | Woodblock print
A black crow perches on a branch of delicate pale cherry blossoms against a dusky gray-green background. The dark bird and the glowing flowers make a beautiful, peaceful scene from Japanese nature, with a few petals drifting down.
Did you know? Koson was famous for his bird-and-flower prints, and over his career he signed them with three different names: Koson, Shoson and Hoson. To make a print like this, a separate wood block was carved for each color, and the paper was pressed onto the blocks one by one, lined up with little guide marks so every color landed in the right place.
