The Fate of the Animals by Franz Marc
The Fate of the Animals (1913)
Franz Marc | Expressionism | Oil on canvas
Panicked animals scatter as fire sweeps through a forest of sharp, crashing colors. In the middle, a blue deer twists away from a falling tree.
Did you know? This painting survived a fire! During World War I, a fire in a warehouse destroyed about a third of it. In 1919 the painter Paul Klee repaired it using old photos, which is why one part looks duller and browner than the rest.
