Tahitian Women on the Beach (1891)

Paul Gauguin | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas

Two Tahitian women sit side by side, still as statues, one in a traditional wrap and the other in a missionary-style dress. Gauguin used bold, flat colors to capture the warmth of this tropical island.

Did you know? Gauguin sailed for Tahiti in 1891 hoping to escape everything artificial in Europe, but the capital, Papeete, was already full of French influence. The missionary-style dress in this painting is a clue to how much European life had reached the island!
