Lamentation (The Mourning of Christ) — Giotto

The dead Christ lies on the ground, and for the first time in a thousand years grief looks real. Mary presses her face to her son's; John flings his arms wide; hooded mourners sit with their backs to us. Giotto painted this around 1305 in Padua's Scrovegni Chapel, and European painting was never the same.
