The Great Day of His Wrath by John Martin
The Great Day of His Wrath (1853)
John Martin | Romanticism | Oil on canvas
Mountains crack and tumble while lightning flashes across a fiery red sky! It's like watching the most epic disaster movie ever painted!
Did you know? This is one of three giant paintings Martin made about the end of the world. Big crowds once lined up to see them, but in 1935 all three sold at auction for just 7 pounds! One was even cut into strips to decorate a screen before it was rescued. In 1974 the three were finally reunited at the Tate.
