Kameyama: Clear Weather After Snow by Utagawa Hiroshige
Kameyama: Clear Weather After Snow (1834)
Utagawa Hiroshige | Ukiyo-e | Woodblock print
Travelers climb a steep, snowy hillside toward a castle gate as the sky clears after a snowfall. Hiroshige's 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido' series is full of weather: sudden rain at Shono, mist at Mishima, and snow here and at Kanbara.
Did you know? Kameyama is not known for harsh winters, but Hiroshige buried it in heavy snow anyway! It is station number 46 of the 53 along the Tokaido road, and the series became one of the best-selling sets of Japanese prints ever made.
