Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Andrea Mantegna

Lamentation over the Dead Christ (1480)

Andrea Mantegna | Renaissance | Tempera on canvas

This painting shows Jesus lying down, but from a very unusual angle - from the feet! Mantegna was a genius at making flat paintings look three-dimensional.

Did you know? Mantegna painted Jesus's feet smaller than they would really look from this angle, and art historians still debate why. One idea: true-size feet would hide much of the body! Squashing a shape so it seems to point right at you is called foreshortening, like a magic trick. Mantegna kept this painting for himself: it was still among his things when he died.
