Las Meninas (The Ladies-in-Waiting) by Diego Velázquez

Las Meninas (The Ladies-in-Waiting) (1656)

Diego Velázquez | Baroque | Oil on canvas

A little princess and her helpers gather in the painter's studio. Look at the mirror on the back wall: the tiny reflection shows the King and Queen!

Did you know? The artist put himself in the painting too - that's Velázquez holding a paintbrush on the left side! The red cross on his chest was added later: he only became a knight of the Order of Santiago in 1659, three years after finishing the picture. The story goes that the King himself painted it in.
