Madonna and Child with Two Angels by Filippo Lippi
Madonna and Child with Two Angels (1465)
Filippo Lippi | Renaissance | Tempera on panel
Mary sits in profile, quietly praying, while two angels hold up baby Jesus. The one in front turns around with the biggest smile! Through the window behind them, a wide landscape stretches all the way to the horizon.
Did you know? Lippi was a friar (a kind of monk), but he fell in love with Lucrezia Buti, a young woman living in a convent. Their son Filippino grew up to be a famous painter too! Tradition says Lucrezia was the model for Mary's face here.
