Madonna of the Candelabra by Raphael

In a perfect circle, the Madonna and her child sit between two tall candelabra, a royal touch borrowed from pictures of ancient Roman emperors: here Mary and Jesus are queen and king of Heaven. Raphael and his workshop made this tondo around 1513, during his years in Rome, and his assistants almost certainly painted the two angels. It was the first Raphael Madonna to reach North America, and in 2011 it became a US Christmas stamp. Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
