Man in a Red Turban (1433)

Jan van Eyck | Northern Renaissance | Oil on oak panel

A man stares straight out at you from under a big red hat. It looks like a turban, but it is really a chaperon, a fashionable cloth hat with its long tail wound around his head. His serious eyes seem to follow you around the room!

Did you know? The National Gallery says the man is almost certainly Jan van Eyck himself, so this may be a selfie from almost 600 years ago! The frame even carries his motto, 'Als Ich Can' (as I can), written in Greek letters as a pun on his name.

Original held at National Gallery
