The Monk by the Sea by Caspar David Friedrich
The Monk by the Sea (1810)
Caspar David Friedrich | Romanticism | Oil on canvas
A tiny figure stands alone on a low dune, looking out at a huge gray sky and a dark, rough sea. It makes you feel how small we are compared to nature!
Did you know? Infrared scans show that Friedrich first painted small sailing ships on the sea, then painted them out, so the monk has no company at all. In 1810 the King of Prussia bought the painting.
