Plum Park in Kameido by Utagawa Hiroshige
Plum Park in Kameido (1857)
Utagawa Hiroshige | Ukiyo-e | Woodblock print
This famous old tree was nicknamed the Sleeping Dragon Plum. Its twisted branches stretch across the front of the picture, while tiny visitors admire the blossoms behind a low fence, all under a red sky!
Did you know? Van Gogh owned a copy of this print, and in 1887 he painted it almost exactly in oil. Oil paint can't be watered down like printing ink, so he used short strokes of mixed colors to copy Hiroshige's smooth color fades!
