Rain, Steam and Speed by J.M.W. Turner
Rain, Steam and Speed (1844)
J.M.W. Turner | Romanticism | Oil on canvas
A train races through rain and mist like a charging monster! Turner made you feel the power and speed of new technology!
Did you know? Look closely in front of the train: a tiny hare runs along the track, almost hidden in the paint! A famous story says a passenger saw Turner lean out of a train window in the rain for nearly nine minutes, but she only guessed the man was Turner after seeing this painting, so nobody can be sure.
