The Raising of the Cross by Peter Paul Rubens
The Raising of the Cross (1611)
Peter Paul Rubens | Baroque | Oil on panel
Strong men strain and push with all their might to raise a heavy wooden cross. The muscles and movement make this painting feel like it is happening right in front of you!
Did you know? To get the straining muscles right, Rubens made chalk drawings while live models posed, a trick he learned in Italy. And this giant painting went on a long trip: it was carried off to Paris in 1794 and did not come home to Antwerp until 1815.
