Christ Crucified Between the Two Thieves: 'The Three Crosses' by Rembrandt
Christ Crucified Between the Two Thieves: 'The Three Crosses' (1653)
Rembrandt | Dutch Golden Age | Drypoint (with burin)
A shaft of heavenly light pours down on Christ while deep darkness swallows the crowd around the three crosses. Rembrandt made this masterpiece not with paint but by scratching lines straight into a copper plate! Those delicate lines wore down after about 40 prints, so he reworked the plate and made the scene even darker.
Did you know? This print is one of a kind! When Rembrandt printed it, he deliberately left extra ink on the left and right sides of the plate, so no other copy looks exactly like it.
