Tobias Healing His Father's Blindness by Rembrandt
Tobias Healing His Father's Blindness (1640)
Rembrandt | Dutch Golden Age | Pen and brown ink, touched with white gouache
In a story from the Book of Tobit, young Tobias heals his blind father, Tobit, while the angel Raphael and the women of the family gather around. Rembrandt drew the scene with quick, confident pen lines and a few touches of white paint, and he filled it with details from everyday life.
Did you know? In the old story, Tobias cures his father by rubbing fish gall on his eyes. Rembrandt changed it: here Tobias uses a scalpel to operate on a cataract in his father's left eye, a new procedure in Amsterdam in Rembrandt's day, and Rembrandt may have watched a doctor perform it. Look for his mother Hannah's spectacles too, a detail found in no other picture of this scene by Rembrandt or his circle.
