Two Sisters (On the Terrace) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Two Sisters (On the Terrace) (1881)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Two girls sit on a sunny terrace beside the river, with blossoming trees behind them and pretty hats on their heads. The younger girl gently touches a basket full of colorful yarn balls!
Did you know? The girls weren't really sisters! Renoir paid two unrelated models to pose. The older one was Jeanne Darlot, an 18-year-old who later became an actress, and they sat on the terrace of a riverside restaurant at Chatou, the same spot Renoir painted in Luncheon of the Boating Party.
