The Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez
The Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez
The Rokeby Venus (1651)
Diego Velázquez | Baroque | Oil on canvas
The goddess Venus lies on a bed looking at herself in a mirror held by her son Cupid. Her face in the mirror is blurry and mysterious!
Did you know? This is the only female nude by Velázquez that has survived. Its nickname comes from Rokeby Park, an English country house where it hung for most of the 1800s.
