Rooster and Hen with Hydrangeas by Itō Jakuchū
Rooster and Hen with Hydrangeas (1757)
Itō Jakuchū | Edo Period | Ink and color on silk
A rooster and his hen stand together among hydrangea flowers. Every single feather is painted with amazing detail!
Did you know? This scroll is one of 30 in a giant set called the Colorful Realm of Living Beings, full of birds, fish, insects, and flowers. Jakuchū worked on the set for about ten years and gave it to Shōkoku-ji, a temple in Kyoto. To learn how chickens look, he sketched the ones in his own garden.
