Samson and Delilah by Peter Paul Rubens
Samson and Delilah (1610)
Peter Paul Rubens | Baroque | Oil on wood
The super-strong Samson sleeps in Delilah's lap while a helper snips his hair - the secret to his power! Soldiers wait just outside to capture him.
Did you know? Rubens loved painting muscles! In Rome he drew famous ancient statues like the Farnese Hercules and the Belvedere Torso, which helped him paint Samson's mighty back and arms. The painting was made to hang over the fireplace in the house of his friend Nicolaas Rockox, the mayor of Antwerp!
