Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya
Saturn Devouring His Son (1823)
Francisco Goya | Romanticism | Oil mural transferred to canvas
The old Roman god Saturn looks wild and scary! Its title points to an ancient myth about a god who feared one of his children would take his place.
Did you know? Goya painted this straight onto a wall inside his own house, when he was in his seventies and deaf. Nobody ordered it, it was probably never meant to leave the house, and Goya never gave it a title: the name came later. About 50 years on, a restorer moved the paint from the wall onto canvas, and today it hangs in the Prado!
