Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear by Vincent van Gogh
Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear (1889)
Vincent van Gogh | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Van Gogh painted himself in a green coat and a fur cap, with a white bandage wrapped around his ear and under his chin. Behind him you can see an easel and a Japanese print on the wall!
Did you know? Van Gogh painted this in January 1889, soon after he hurt his left ear during a hard time. He used a mirror, so the bandage looks like it is on his right ear! That same month he painted a second bandaged-ear self-portrait, this one with a pipe.
