Still Life with Apples by Paul Cézanne

Still Life with Apples (1893)

Paul Cézanne | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas

A pile of apples sits on a table covered in blue and white cloths, crowded in by a ginger pot, bottles and a plate of fruit. Cézanne made simple fruit look like the most interesting thing in the world!

Did you know? Cézanne is said to have promised to 'astonish Paris with an apple.' He painted apples again and again, and propped them up with little wedges, and sometimes coins, so they would stay in just the right pose.
