Stoke-by-Nayland (1836)

John Constable | Romanticism | Oil on canvas

A summer morning in the English countryside, just after a rain shower. On the left, a bright, breezy view leads to a Suffolk village and its tall church tower. On the right, a shady lane holds a horse and farm cart, and puddles shine in the foreground. It is really a full-size sketch for a finished painting Constable never got to make.

Did you know? Constable wrote to a friend that this painting showed a very exact moment: a July or August morning at eight or nine o'clock, after a slight shower in the night. He painted it as much with a palette knife as with brushes, and flecked it with white dabs to make everything look wet and sparkling!
