The Angelus by Jean-François Millet
The Angelus (1859)
Jean-François Millet | Realism | Oil on canvas
A farmer couple stops work to pray as church bells ring in the distance. The golden sunset makes everything peaceful!
Did you know? Salvador Dalí was so fascinated by this painting that he wrote a whole book about it. He wondered if the couple were mourning a child and asked the Louvre to X-ray the canvas. The X-ray showed an oblong shape near their feet, which Dalí read as a coffin, though most experts do not agree!
