Two young women pause on a rocky beach by the sea. One sits on the sand while the other leans over a big boulder, and a shallow pool at their feet reflects the rock. The canvas is about 6 1/2 feet tall, and Bouguereau painted their skin so smoothly that it is hard to spot a single brushstroke!

Did you know? Bouguereau sold this painting to a Paris art dealer in October 1884. In 1885 a buyer in Philadelphia paid 36,000 francs for it, and when it was sold again in New York in 1886 it fetched 100,450 francs, nearly three times as much!
