The Floor Scrapers by Gustave Caillebotte
The Floor Scrapers (1875)
Gustave Caillebotte | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Workers scrape a wooden floor on their knees, their muscles showing how hard they work. Light streams in from a window at the back!
Did you know? The Salon jury turned this painting down in 1875! Some people thought shirtless workers were too "vulgar" to be art. So Caillebotte, who had inherited a fortune the year before, showed it with the Impressionists in 1876 instead.
