The Gross Clinic by Thomas Eakins
The Gross Clinic (1875)
Thomas Eakins | Realism | Oil on canvas
A famous doctor teaches students while performing an operation. His bloody hand and serious face show the hard work of medicine!
Did you know? The selection committee for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia turned this painting down (one rumor said the blood made some members feel sick), so it hung in an Army hospital display instead! Eakins also painted himself into the scene, sketching at the right edge.
