The Yellow House by Vincent van Gogh

The Yellow House (1888)

Vincent van Gogh | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas

A cheerful yellow building stands on a sunny street corner in the south of France. Van Gogh lived and worked in this house, and he dreamed of starting an artists' community there!

Did you know? Van Gogh invited his friend Paul Gauguin to share the Yellow House. They painted side by side for about nine weeks, but they quarreled more and more, and in December 1888 Gauguin left Arles. They never saw each other again, though they kept writing letters. Sadly, the real house was badly damaged by bombing in 1944 and later torn down.
