The Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn
The Threatened Swan (1650)
Jan Asselijn | Baroque | Oil on canvas
A fierce white swan spreads its wings to protect its nest from danger. Don't mess with mama swan!
Did you know? This was the very first painting the Dutch national art gallery ever bought, in 1800, and that gallery grew into the Rijksmuseum! Later viewers saw a hidden message too: words on the canvas name the swan as the Dutch leader Johan de Witt, an egg as Holland, and the dog as the enemy of the state.
