Three Beauties of the Present Day by Kitagawa Utamaro
Three Beauties of the Present Day (1793)
Kitagawa Utamaro | Ukiyo-e | Woodblock print
Three fashionable young women with their hair piled up in the latest style are shown close together. They were real people of Edo, the city we now call Tokyo: a famous geisha named Toyohina, plus Kita from a teahouse and Hisa from a rice cake shop.
Did you know? Tiny family crests tell you who is who: Toyohina's primrose is on her sleeve, Kita's paulownia is on her fan, and Hisa's oak leaves are on her kimono. The shiny background is dusted with mica, a sparkly mineral.
