Wheat Field with Cypresses by Vincent van Gogh
Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889)
Vincent van Gogh | Post-Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Golden wheat swirls under a churning sky while dark cypress trees reach upward like green flames. Painted the same summer as The Starry Night, this landscape captures Van Gogh's extraordinary ability to make everything feel alive with energy.
Did you know? Van Gogh painted this scene three times. The Met's canvas came first, in late June or early July 1889, probably right out in the field. That September he made a studio copy, now in London's National Gallery, and a smaller one as a gift for his mother and sister. He told his brother Theo the sky looked like a piece of Scotch plaid, and he counted it among his best summer paintings!
