Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (1818)

Caspar David Friedrich | Romanticism | Oil on canvas

A man stands on a rocky cliff looking out over a sea of misty clouds and mountains. What an adventure!

Did you know? This view is not one real place! Friedrich sketched real rocks and peaks in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, then rearranged them in his studio like puzzle pieces. And since we never see the wanderer's face, it is easy to imagine yourself standing there!
