Waves at Matsushima (1630)

Tawaraya Sōtatsu | Rinpa School | Ink, color, gold, and silver on paper

Waves of ink and gold swirl around rocky islands with bending pine trees. Gold clouds and shores make everything shimmer like treasure!

Did you know? Matsushima means 'Pine Islands', and it's one of the Three Views of Japan. But these screens only got that name later: when Charles Lang Freer bought them in 1906, they were labeled 'Rolling Waves and Rocks'!

Original held at Freer Gallery of Art

Museum-quality giclée print on archival Enhanced Matte Art paper (200gsm) with fade-resistant pigment inks rated for 100+ years. Also available as gallery-wrapped canvas and custom framed.
