Looking Down Yosemite Valley, California by Albert Bierstadt
Looking Down Yosemite Valley, California (1865)
Albert Bierstadt | Hudson River School | Oil on canvas
Towering cliffs, with Sentinel Rock on the left and El Capitan on the right, frame a peaceful green valley stretching into the golden, hazy distance. Bierstadt made the American West look like a magical wonderland!
Did you know? This painting was rescued from a burning opera house in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 1929 it sold at auction for just $300, then hung in a library in Birmingham, Alabama, for 45 years while art experts did not even know it existed. A cleaning in 1974 brought back its glow and uncovered Bierstadt's signature.
