The Young Beggar by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
The Young Beggar (1650)
Bartolomé Esteban Murillo | Baroque | Oil on canvas
A barefoot boy sits on the floor in a beam of light from a window, picking lice off himself. Even though he has very little, the warm golden light makes the scene feel gentle and kind.
Did you know? Look around him: leftover shrimp lie scattered on the floor, next to a basket of apples and a clay jug. This is Murillo's earliest known painting of a street kid, a surprise from an artist best known for religious scenes!
