Adoration of the Magi (Washington) by Sandro Botticelli
Adoration of the Magi (Washington) (1478)
Sandro Botticelli | Early Renaissance | Tempera and oil on poplar panel
Three wise men from faraway lands, whom tradition calls kings, have traveled to see the baby Jesus, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Botticelli packed the scene with about three dozen people and several horses, all gathered in the ruins of an old temple instead of a stable!
Did you know? Botticelli probably painted this one in Rome, where Pope Sixtus IV had called him to paint the walls of the Sistine Chapel. Later it traveled to Russia: Czar Alexander I bought it in 1808.
