The Alba Madonna by Raphael
The Alba Madonna (1510)
Raphael | High Renaissance | Oil on panel transferred to canvas
Mary sits on the ground in a beautiful meadow, holding baby Jesus close while young John the Baptist kneels beside them. John holds up a little cross, and Jesus reaches out to grab it. All three figures fit snugly inside the round painting!
Did you know? This painting traveled from Italy to Spain to England to Russia to America! It is named after the Spanish Dukes of Alba, who owned it in the 1700s. In 1931 the Soviet government secretly sold it to Andrew Mellon for $1,166,400, the most anyone had ever paid for a single painting up to then. Now it's a treasure of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
