A blue-gray mountain towers over orange earth and green trees near Aix-en-Provence, in the south of France. Cézanne painted this view outdoors, with his easel set up beside a small road leading east from Aix toward the mountain. A pine branch reaches across the sky from the left edge, echoing the slope of the mountain and tying the near and far parts of the scene together.
