The Court of Gayumars (c. 1525)
The first king of the world holds court on a mountaintop, his people dressed in leopard skins, wild animals lying tame at his feet. Painted in the 1520s by Sultan Muhammad for the Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp, this page has been called "probably the greatest picture in Iranian art": a whole cosmos in watercolor and gold.
