Dancers at the Barre by Edgar Degas
Dancers at the Barre (1900)
Edgar Degas | Impressionism | Oil on canvas
Two dancers warm up at a practice bar, glowing in bright blue and white against a blazing orange background. Late in life, Degas cared more about bold color than neat details!
Did you know? Degas kept coming back to this painting for about two decades! When a conservator began studying it in 2007, she found he had cut down the canvas, moved the dancers' arms and legs several times, and even dabbed paint on one dancer's neck with his thumb.
