The Death of Sardanapalus (1827)

Eugène Delacroix | Romanticism | Oil on canvas

Legend says that when rebels surrounded his palace, King Sardanapalus refused to surrender. Here he lies on a huge red bed, calmly watching as his guards destroy his treasures and even his prized horse. Delacroix filled this enormous painting, nearly 13 feet tall and more than 16 feet wide, with wild colors and swirling action!

Did you know? The painting was inspired by Lord Byron's 1821 play about this legendary king. Critics disliked it so much that one called it "the fanaticism of ugliness," and an official warned Delacroix to change his style!
